Anne Koskinen is a visual artist and a doctoral researcher at the University of Helsinki.
In visual art, Anne is fascinated by the process by which material becomes an image. This is something she wants to witness using a range of techniques from stone sculptures and bronzes to drawings, watercolours and oil paintings. Many of her works are multi-part installations, and she has also created several public artworks. The ideas of sustainability and responsibility guide her work, which is why she prefers to use local materials and make her works herself. A recurring theme in Anne’s work is power relations, as in her most recent solo exhibition titled in German Am anderen Ende der Leine (English At the Other End of the Leash, Galerie Anhava 2022), and perhaps most poignantly in her stone sculptures The Last Dictator (2014), Girls without Pigtails (2014) and Findlinge (2012–). Anne is represented by Gallery Anhava in Finland, Gallery Werner Klein in Germany and Gallery Axel Pairon in Belgium. Her work has been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions. In addition to private collections, her work can also be found in many public collections.
At the University of Helsinki, her research is situated at the intersection of philosophical aesthetics and German linguistics. She focuses on the theory of image production and the visual constitution of meaning in the multimodal and multilingual contexts of everyday life, art and philosophy. At the same time, the relationship between language, thought and power is an important topic, without forgetting the concepts of intercultural and transgenerational communication, which are also key sources of inspiration for her in art.
Anne studied visual arts at the Karlsruhe Academy of Fine Arts in Germany, where she completed postgraduate studies (Meisterschülerjahr) after graduating from the Academy, and at the University of Art and Design Helsinki (now part of Aalto University) in Finland (Master of Arts). She also majored in German philology at the Albert-Ludwigs-University in Freiburg, Germany, and the University of Helsinki, Finland (Bachelor of Arts with pedagogical studies for teachers, Master of Arts).
After graduating in visual arts, she was Professor of Visual Arts and Visual Culture, Head of Department and Dean at the University of Art and Design Helsinki. In Pori, where she was Rector of the Pori Art School, she launched a new School of Visual Culture as part of the University of Art and Design Helsinki and a Master’s programme in visual culture. At the University Consortium of Pori, the training interacted with the fields of technology, economics, landscape studies and social sciences. Anne also designed, launched and managed projects funded by the European Union.
Anne enjoys life in both cities and the countryside, in her native country Finland and abroad. Her interest in the diversity of languages and cultures also colours her free time.
